Talen Energy Wins Nuclear Energy
Institute’s TIP Award for High School Nuclear Co-Op Program with WBACTC

The Nuclear Energy Institute (NEI) recently in-formed Talen Energy’s Susquehanna Nuclear that it had won a Top Innovative Practice (TIP) Award this year for its submission of the “Nuclear Co-Op Program Recruits High School Seniors as Outage Workers” entry. Susquehanna’s Pilot Co-Op Program officially launched in advance of this year’s Unit 2 refueling outage. It’s also the first time in Susquehanna’s 42 year history that a formal training program connecting area high school students with the nuclear power industry was formed.
Dr. Guariglia and Mr. Majikes were instrumental in launching the Co-Op Program within their organization, Wilkes-Barre Area Career & Technical Center. They helped identify nine seniors, who ultimately received training and the formal qualifications necessary, to work alongside nuclear professionals during the most recent refueling and inspection outage at Susquehanna Steam Electric Station (SSES).
